Viktor Ryzhakov


Viktor Ryzhakov was born in Khabarovsk in 1960 and graduated from the Far-East Arts College, the Shchukin Theatre School and later took a post-graduate course at the Russian Academy of Theatre Arts. In 1991 Viktor joined the Moscow Theatre for Young Spectators (TYuZ) where he worked under the guidance of Genrietta Yanovskaya and Kama Ginkas. He was the artistic director of the independent theatre festival Theatre in Search of Theatre in Sochi in 1993. From 1995 till 2001, he was artistic director of the Kamchatka Drama and Comedy Theatre. In 2000, in association with the actors of the Kamchatka Theatre, Viktor Ryzhakov founded an international theatre project Karaul No.8 which participated in international festivals in Edinburgh, Los Angeles, Tbilisi, Lodz, Vienna and Magnitogorsk. Viktor Ryzhakov has been a professor at the Moscow Art Theatre School since 2001. In 2002, Ryzhakov became a founder and leader of the Pyat’ Vecherov (Five Evenings) Volodin’s Theatre Festival. He directed a number of plays by Ivan Vyrypaev, including “Oxygen” at the Praktika Theatre and Teatr.doc; “Genesis no.2” and “Valentina’s Day” at the Theatre of Nations, Moscow; “The City where I am”, “July” and “The Drunks” at the Moscow Art Theatre; “The Forty First. Opus Post”, “The Cursed And The Slain”, “July”, “Weeps” at the Praktika Theatre; “Five Evenings” at the Pyotr Fomenko Theatre; “The Pushkin`s Little Tragedies” at the Satiricon Theatre; “Gods are Fallen and all Safety Gone”; “Sasha, take out the Trash” and “Old-Fashioned Concert” at the Meyerhold Centre; “Woe From Wit” at the Moscow Art Theatre School; “Games in The Backyard” at the Estonian National Drama; “Coiffeuse” and Verdi’s “Aida” at Hungarian theatres; “An Optimistic Tragegy. The Farewell Ball” at Alexandrinsky Theatre, St. Petersburg. Viktor Ryzhakov is a winner of numerous national and international theatre prizes, including the Golden Mask Russian National Theatre Award. In 2020 his production “Iran Conference” has been nominated for the Russian National Golden Mask Award 2020.
