THE GOSPELS

The most energetic representative of the Moscow theatre underground Vasya Berezin has staged an opera based on the text of Luke the Evangelist. Music was written by composer-experimentalist Alexey Kokhanov. In the warm season the show is performed at abandoned Houses of Culture, and while it’s still cold – in lofts. Men and women in white, alternating musical genres and vocal techniques, from Gospel and Orthodox chanting to recitative and dodecaphony, virtually perform a ritual of religious service (while on tour in St.Petersburg the show was performed at St.Anna’s Lutheran church). This ritual has an aura of antiquity, genuineness and tranquility. The opera runs on two evenings (Parts 1 and 4 on the first, 2 and 3 on the second). For the Russian Case guests the Binary Biotheatre will perform a shortened 2-hour long version of the production.
