About Russian Case

In 2000 the Golden Mask Festival launched the Russian Case Programme with the idea to establish a 5-day showcase of Russian theatre addressed to international festival and venue programmers, presenters, theatre researchers, journalists and critics. Since then Russian Case has become an important annual event attended by some 80 guests from 25-30 countries. For many of them attending the Russian Case has become an integral part of their professional life.

The Russian Case traditionally presents premieres of the previous season nominated for the Golden Mask Award and also some of the most interesting premiers of the current season. The programme is selected by highly reputed theatre critics.

The Russian Case organizers aim to present a programme that demonstrates the trends in Russian theatre to specialists from all over the world. The Russian Case is the place for dialogue between Russian and world theatre; it provides a space for creative interaction and professional exchange.

In practical terms, the Russian Case has led to collaborations between Russian and foreign theatres and festivals, as well as international press coverage and articles being published in magazines and theatre journals. Russian productions are invited to international theatre festivals, and theatre directors are invited to stage outside of Russia; contemporary Russian plays get translated and performed in other countries. For the Golden Mask organizers, an important outcome of the Russian Case is the development of collaborations with international partners aimed to present the best of Russian theatre in other countries.

The 22d Russian Case edition was held online 1–6 April, 2021 and attracted an unprecedented professional audience of over 450 people.

The next showcase edition is scheduled for April 7 – 12, 2022 and its format will depend on the Covid-19 situation.
